haiku my heart ~ August Full Moon
AUGUST 22, 2013
Pearl in the night sky,
the great sturgeon swims your wake...
Jewel in my hand.

One of the names for the August moon is the "Sturgeon Moon."

From the [Farmer's Almanac](http://www.farmersalmanac.com/full-moon-names)... "Full Sturgeon Moon – August The fishing tribes are given credit for the naming of this Moon, since sturgeon, a large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water, were most readily caught during this month. A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon because, as the Moon rises, it appears reddish through any sultry haze. It was also called the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon."

I then went in search of the medicine of the great sturgeon and found this from [Wolf Creek Arts](http://www.wolfcreekarts.com/sturgeon.htm)... "Sturgeon is the animal totem associated with the Ripe Berries Moon. The sturgeon is known as the king of fishes. A primitive fish that has probably existed on the earth since around the time the dinosaurs disappeared, the sturgeon comes in a variety of sizes, but can reach twelve-foot lengths and at least 300-pound weights.

Sturgeons were considered the royalty of fishes among the Native people who lived in the Great Lakes area. In the Ojibwa nation there is a Sturgeon clan that is one of the teaching clans. To the Ojibwa people the sturgeon represents depth and strength.

The European people who came to North America did not have the same respect for this fish. At first they considered it a nuisance when sturgeons got in their nets. Later they almost fished it to extinction when they discovered the value of its roe, which is better known as caviar. The sturgeon is rarely found now.

Working with the sturgeon can teach you about your determination, perseverance, depth, knowledge, generosity, strength, and sexuality."

Walking over to my neighbors as the full moon rose in the night sky, it took my breath away and I snapped this picture that I then enhanced in photo shop. Little did I know where this photo and haiku would take me...
to the great sturgeon and its message to me...
truly a gem in my hand...

Let your imagination go...
and see if this full moon,
in the night sky through the arms of trees...
becomes but the reflection in a deep lake...
with the great fish...
swimming round and round...

Labyrinths provide us with a path to practice change. Some labyrinths have withstood the passage of time for thousands of years. Others are here for just an afternoon, drawn in the sand at the edge of the ocean. Many modern labyrinths were meant to last for years, but because of unforeseen circumstances their time is shorter than intended. And they once again help us to practice letting go and giving thanks for the time they are with us. The Labyrinth of Life at the Sebastopol, California Teen Center reached such place of letting go and is at the end of one chapter and the beginning of another chapter that is yet unknown.

Sometimes... a labyrinth can take years to become a physical reality. In 2018 I met with my friend Deb, to discuss her desire to have a labyrinth on the beautiful land she lives on. Despite our plans and several meetings, listening to the land and finding the right spot, the labyrinth did not come to fruition. Fast-forward five years and in the blink of an eye... it happened!
