My Mom & The Chickadee & Fire-Writing
FEBRUARY 21, 2007
Today,
is my mom's seventy-second
Birth Day...
Happy Birth Day Mom!

I am pretty lucky
to have such a great mom,
who is also one of my best friends...
We do some neat things together...
Like... our Tuesday watercolor class...
or going out on the town in what we
really like to wear...
Today...
we went and saw "Bridge To Terabithia"
a poignant, magical movie
about the power of love and the imagination...
I believe my gift for creativity and imagination
comes from both my parents,
they have always encouraged me to follow my passion
to create,
as do they...
My dad- vineyards, my mom- magic, beauty,
and her latest passion- watercoloring...
My mom is also a big advocate for animal rights
and humane treatment...
Of all creatures, she loves best the birds,
big and small, especially the chickadees that grace
her feeder...
For Valentines Day,
my father gave me wood-burning pens,
he said, "pens instead of roses..."
So, I took a woodburning class
also through [Gourd College Online](http://www.gourdcollegeonline.com/ClassesJennAvery.html)
with the gifted pyrography artist [Jenn Avery](http://www.jragourdart.com/)....
and made my first ever chickadee...
First Jenn had us prepare the gourd...
I love this gourd,
(from [Helen Thomas](http://www.sandlady.com/), the "Gourd Sand Lady" in Indiana)
for it looks like a Bosc Pear...
So I sand...
Then draw the little chickadee
that comes from a photo at Jenn's
bird feeder in Pennsylvania...
Then,
I begin to burn with my pens,
fire-writing...

And my chickadee begins to emerge...
With some suggestions from Jenn...
my first chickadee is ready for flight...
and finds its way home
with my mom,
a gift of love,
for a mother who blesses my life
in so many ways...

Labyrinths provide us with a path to practice change. Some labyrinths have withstood the passage of time for thousands of years. Others are here for just an afternoon, drawn in the sand at the edge of the ocean. Many modern labyrinths were meant to last for years, but because of unforeseen circumstances their time is shorter than intended. And they once again help us to practice letting go and giving thanks for the time they are with us. The Labyrinth of Life at the Sebastopol, California Teen Center reached such place of letting go and is at the end of one chapter and the beginning of another chapter that is yet unknown.

Sometimes... a labyrinth can take years to become a physical reality. In 2018 I met with my friend Deb, to discuss her desire to have a labyrinth on the beautiful land she lives on. Despite our plans and several meetings, listening to the land and finding the right spot, the labyrinth did not come to fruition. Fast-forward five years and in the blink of an eye... it happened!
