Prep For A New Labyrinth
MARCH 14, 2010
I will be assisting the pastor and members of Christ Church United Methodist to paint what will be the first public Santa Rosa Labyrinth actually in the city of Santa Rosa, California!!!
The first Santa Rosa Labyrinth on the West Coast was installed at the Teen Annex in Sebastopol, California in 1999. Here it is having the bricks re-sett in 2004...

as was simultaneous, the first East Coast installation at Govans Presbyterian Church in Baltimore, Maryland! Here is their labyrinth at the re-dedication in also in 2004!
This past Thursday, I prepped the area where the labyrinth is going to be painted, with a power washer.
I love power washing. I find it a very meditative exercise... back and forth, back and forth... kind of like walking a labyrinth! There is something satisfying in seeing years of dirt and grime come away in strips... also kind of like walking a labyrinth!!!

When I prep an area, I do it with intention... of laying the foundation for what is to come, for the people, young and old, who will walk, pray, play, laugh and cry, dance, sing, be silent, sit and watch, and discover new levels of what it means to be human, walking this path in life...

I wrote in the dirty concrete... Peace...
then Joy...
then Love...
and then... I couldn't come up with one last single word...
mystery... curiosity... laughter... faith...
and then it came to me...
Life...
For life encompasses it all...
and is full in this place...
this blank slate just waiting
for something new to be born...

Labyrinths provide us with a path to practice change. Some labyrinths have withstood the passage of time for thousands of years. Others are here for just an afternoon, drawn in the sand at the edge of the ocean. Many modern labyrinths were meant to last for years, but because of unforeseen circumstances their time is shorter than intended. And they once again help us to practice letting go and giving thanks for the time they are with us. The Labyrinth of Life at the Sebastopol, California Teen Center reached such place of letting go and is at the end of one chapter and the beginning of another chapter that is yet unknown.

Sometimes... a labyrinth can take years to become a physical reality. In 2018 I met with my friend Deb, to discuss her desire to have a labyrinth on the beautiful land she lives on. Despite our plans and several meetings, listening to the land and finding the right spot, the labyrinth did not come to fruition. Fast-forward five years and in the blink of an eye... it happened!
