Because of the winding rivers in the Bend, OR area, specifically the Deschutes River we let the imagery guide us. We created a pass-through labyrinth design with a nod to the history of "Farewell Bend" which was where the last campsite and watering spot was for pioneers following the Oregon Trail along the Deschutes River before turning northwest into more challenging terrain. </span> </span> <span> <span>  </span> </span> </p> </div> <div> <img src="https://irp.cdn-website.com/412f34f3/dms3rep/multi/IMG_6376-0d4dfabf-ac93b90f.jpeg" alt=""/> </div> <div data-rss-type="text"> <p> <span> <span> With Marilyn in Minnesota and me in Northern California, most of our design collaborations are via phone and photos. But this time we had the opportunity to work on the design together in person. And we created a mock-up of the proposed labyrinth with found stones. </span> </span> </p> </div> <div data-rss-type="text"> <p> <span> <span> It took a year and a half to navigate the complexities of installing a public labyrinth involving many different players. But with everyone working together and keeping the communication channels open, the results were incredibly beautiful.  I was fortunate to get to be there for the dedication and meet in person the wonderful people who made this labyrinth happen. I realized that the Santa Rosa design came through </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> the day after Pi Day. </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> 3.14 </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> The day after the golden mean. </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> It took me 27 years to make that connection! </span> </p> <p> <span> <br/> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> All these years have created all sorts of connections around the world, </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> paths weaving in and out of time and place. And, people </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> continue to share their photos of the Santa Rosa Labyrinths they have made. </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> Their beauty and intention ripple outward... </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <br/> </span> </p> <p> <span> Here are a few to share with you on this birthday that spun from my heart, </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> my fingers, and my curiosity </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> all these many years ago </span> </p> <p> <span> of bending and turning, </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> of collaboration and sharing, </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> sparking creativity </span> </p> <p> <span> in so many forms... </span> </p> <p> <span> <br/> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> The first four photos are from Peter Clark from the UK. One drawn at the seaside. One painted in a prison. </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> The second set of four photos are from Ange Virgona, Australia. The first three, set in stone. passage of time for thousands of years. </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <br/> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> Others are here for just an afternoon, </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> drawn in the sand at the edge of the ocean. </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> Many modern labyrinths were meant to last for years, </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> but because of unforeseen circumstances their time is shorter than intended. </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> And they once again help us to practice letting go and giving thanks for the time they are with us. </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <br/> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> The Labyrinth of Life at the Sebastopol, California Teen Center reached such place of letting go </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> and is at the end of one chapter and the beginning of another chapter that is yet unknown. </span> </span> </p> </div> <div> <img src="https://irp.cdn-website.com/412f34f3/dms3rep/multi/IMG_5347.jpeg" alt=""/> </div> <div data-rss-type="text"> <p> <span> <span> Beloved by many, this labyrinth was installed as a statement of life </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> in the face of many local teen deaths in the late 1990s. </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> Community of all ages and many local businesses contributed to its making. </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <br/> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> Time revealed that this labyrinth was difficult to maintain </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> with the ever-shifting ground, drought, and flooding. </span> </span> </p> <p> <br/> </p> <p> <span> <span> <span>  </span> Four memorial benches still hold the space where the labyrinth was. </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <br/> </span> </p> </div> <div> <img is something we cannot see… </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> that once a labyrinth is placed on the ground with intent and walked by many… </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> the energetic imprint remains even though the physical features may not. </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> And the love remains. </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> Change, loss, and letting go opens the space for something new </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> and an opportunity to be curious. </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <br/> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> If you find yourself at the center of the empty space </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> of the Sebastopol Teen Center Memorial Garden… </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> open to that space, the ground below, the sky above, </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> to the energetic imprint of the labyrinth, </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> and to all the love that continues to ripple out into our community </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <br/> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> In 2018 I met with my friend Deb, </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> <span>  </span> to discuss her desire to have a labyrinth on the beautiful land she lives on. </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> Despite our plans and several meetings, </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> listening to the land and finding the right spot, </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> the labyrinth did not come to fruition. </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <br/> </span> </p> <p> <span> Fast-forward five years and in the blink of an eye... it happened! <br/> </span> </p> <p> <span>   </span> </p> </div> <div data-rss-type="text"> <p> <span> <span> This sweet three-circuit Classical Labyrinth was created in less than two hours. </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <br/> </span> </p> <p> <span> Deborah says... </span> </p> <p> <span> This labyrinth is created in perfect timing!! Life and energy is all about change. We have expectations and desires and try as we might— the universe brings in what is perfect in the moment. Thank goodness for Lea and her suggestion, “let’s just do it! And make it simple and small”. The fallen needles are a natural deterrent of additional plant material emerging in the soil. The simple rocks lining the paths do need to be shifted back into place over time as they have a tendency to move over time because of foot traffic and critters scampering over the labyrinth. It was an amazing day of history and legends with a gentleman who is truly a Scottish National Treasure.New Paragraph </span> </p> </div> <div> <img src="https://irp.cdn-website.com/412f34f3/dms3rep/multi/munro.jpeg" alt=""/> <span> </span> </div> <div data-rss-type="text"> <p> <span> One of the things that The Chief of Clan Munro shared with us, was this ancient sundial. He said that it also tracked the cycles of the moon. How all the nooks and crannies and projections all worked together… has long been lost and forgotten. But it was still an object of beauty and workmanship to be admired. This is the second installation of a seven-circuit, Classical Labyrinth at the TLC Child &amp; Family Center in Sebastopol, CA. I had the opportunity to assist the students and staff in March of 2010 in laying out their original labyrinth to honor and remember one of their former Journey Academy students who was enlisted in the Army and killed in action in Afghanistan. TLC wanted this space to also honor all of the students, family and staff that use this labyrinth for so many things. To remember. To soothe anxiety. To learn about navigating life-changes. To mark special occasions. To connect with themselves and the land around them. And most of all, to be a part of a community that cares. Because of some land maintenance, the original labyrinth had to be removed. The teens did this dismantling with honor, intention, and ceremony, placing the stones to the side. Once the ground was prepared at the original site, about forty volunteers of adults and teens rebuilt this labyrinth in thirty-five minutes! </span> </p> <p> <br/> </p> <p> <span> Noyo River Stones. Kimberly Saward, Alyssa Hall, and Sue Anne Foster. That November tragedy disintegrated my family unit with a single blow. Somehow… St. Jude has managed to stick by me all these years and this past summer I created this chaplet for him with nine-million-year-old Connemara beads and a jade Tibetan knot at the other end. <br/> St. Jude is who you petition when you are faced with impossible circumstances. This beloved kin of Christ and Mary, who is also known as the Green Man, holds great mystery and assistance in making the impossible, possible. My recent Novena to him was in asking for help in holding the internal tension of opposites that I’ve been grappling with. And to help us all navigate the opposites in the world that we face. I was also reminded… that twenty-years ago when completing my dissertation that I was also given a means of navigating opposites and finding the way through them to discover what really matters to my heart. I went back to what I had written then and share it with you here now. <br/> <br/> I hope it is of help to you today and in the days to come. <br/> <br/> </span> </p> </div> <div data-rss-type="text"> <p> <span> -Short Version- </span> <span> <br/> </span> <span> The Labyrinth Process: What Matters To Your Heart </span> <span> <br/> <br/> </span> <span> When you have only a small amount of time… </span> </p> <p> <span> <br/> </span> </p> </div> <div data-rss-type="text"> <ol> <li> <span> <span> Place your hands over your heart. Breathe into this space. </span> </span> </li> <li> <span> Ask: What really matters to my heart? If I could have anything, no matter how small or big, what would that be? Just a one-word answer will work. </span> <span> <br/> </span> </li> <li> <span> <span> Next, ask to know what is the opposite of my heart’s desire? What is keeping me from what I truly desire? Again, a one-word answer will work. </span> </span> <span> <br/> </span> </li> <li> <span> Hold both of these opposite images in your mind’s eye, equally. Then, take at least three, or more, deep breaths into your heart and hands while thinking of these two images/concepts. </span> <span> <br/> </span> </li> <li> <span> <span> Then let them go. </span> </span> <span> <br/> </span> </li> <li> <span> Take another breath and ask to know a third new thing. Be curious as to what will come. A single word or image will work </span> <span> <br/> </span> </li> <li> <span> Take a few more breaths and be with this new awareness </span> <span> <br/> </span> </li> </ol> </div> <div data-rss-type="text"> <p> <span> -Long Version- </span> <span> <br/> </span> <span> The Labyrinth Process: What Matters To Your Heart? </span> </p> <p> <br/> </p> <p> <span> When you have some time to explore these opposites in more depth using the Santa Rosa design or any other labyrinth you have access to. </span> </p> </div> <div> <img src="https://irp.cdn-website.com/412f34f3/dms3rep/multi/b-wsrl.grnhrt.jpg" alt=""/> <span> </span> </div> <div data-rss-type="text"> <p> <span> <br/> <br/> Materials Needed: </span> </p> <p> <br/> </p> <ol> <li> <span> A journal &amp; pen or pencil </span> </li> <li> <span> Art materials: paper, colored-markers, pencils, crayons, paints, clay, or any other desired medium. </span> </li> <li> <span> Finger labyrinth (any design will work, the longer the path, the longer the contemplation). </span> </li> <li> <span> Or you can use a permanent or temporary walking labyrinth <br/> </span> </li> </ol> <p> <br/> </p> <p> <span> <span> The Seven-Steps: What do you want to explore? Or, what problem are you dealing with? Almost anything that comes to mind has an opposite. Take one side and begin. </span> </span> </p> <p> <br/> </p> <ol> <li> <span> What really matters to my heart? If I could have anything, no matter how small or big, what would that be? Use your journal or art materials to write about this or draw your image, or the colors that represent what matters to your heart. What shape, form, color, or image would best describe this first exploration of opposites? <br/> </span> </li> <li> <span> <span> What gets in the way of what matters to my heart? Using a different page of your journal or a second piece of art material, ask to know what is the conflicting polar opposite of my first image? What is keeping me from my heart’s desire? What shape, form, color, or image would this opposite look like? </span> </span> </li> <li> <span> Reflect on the conflict or struggle between these two images, or concepts while walking, or finger-walking the labyrinth. Keep your mind focused on both of them and don’t linger more on one or the other. </span> </li> <li> <span> <span> When you reach the center of the labyrinth, release these first two images, let them go. Then, ask to know a third new image or concept. </span> </span> </li> <li> <span> Walk, or finger-walk, your way back out of the labyrinth with this new image and/or concept. </span> </li> <li> <span> <span> Use your journal or art materials to create this third newly discovered image or concept in response to the experience of having walked, or finger walked the labyrinth. This sometimes happens, however the process, the plans and collaboration, and the temporary installation of a labyrinth can be as important as a permanent installation. </span> </span> </h4> </div> <div data-rss-type="text"> <h6> <a href="http://www.churchoftheroses.org" target="_blank"> Church of the Roses </a> <span> <span> in Santa Rosa, CA has begun the process of making plans for a labyrinth. They have chosen the Santa Rosa Labyrinth design as a part of their garden that will interface with their surrounding community. </span> </span> </h6> <p> <span> <br/> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span> These plans will replace an existing problematic lawn with roses, flowering trees, benches, and the labyrinth as a center point of focus. </span> </span> <span> <br/> </span> </p> <p> <span> Church of the Roses had a number of members who lost their homes to the 2017 firestorm that ravaged the City of Santa Rosa, our Sonoma County, and neighboring counties. <br/> </span> </p> </div> <div data-rss-type="text"> <p> <span> This garden and labyrinth is being dedicated to all those affected by the fires. The labyrinth is located on the rooftop that houses the national headquarters of The World Resource Institute. This organization creates green work-spaces as well as finding ways to protect the earth and improve people’s lives.
