in Bend, OR contacted us to see if we were interested in designing a labyrinth for a public park in a new development.

It was the start of an exciting journey together and the meeting of some extraordinary people along the way, in a beautiful place on this Earth.

We were introduced to the proposed site through a series of photos, a bare strip of land that reminded Marylin and I of a dry riverbed. Because of the winding rivers in the Bend, OR area, specifically the Deschutes River we let the imagery guide us. We created a pass-through labyrinth design with a nod to the history of "Farewell Bend" which was where the last campsite and watering spot was for pioneers following the Oregon Trail along the Deschutes River before turning northwest into more challenging terrain.

With Marilyn in Minnesota and me in Northern California, most of our design collaborations are via phone and photos. But this time we had the opportunity to work on the design together in person. And we created a mock-up of the proposed labyrinth with found stones.

It took a year and a half to navigate the complexities of installing a public labyrinth involving many different players. But with everyone working together and keeping the communication channels open, the results were incredibly beautiful. I was fortunate to get to be there for the dedication and meet in person the wonderful people who made this labyrinth happen. Local Sparrow Bakery even created labyrinth cookies to be shared by those who attended!

           twenty-seven turns
around and around the sun

           the moon smiles as well

These twenty-seven years have taken me places...
I could have never dreamed of.

Just today... I realized that the Santa Rosa design came through

            the day after Pi Day.

The day after the golden mean.

It took me 27 years to make that connection!

All these years have created all sorts of connections around the world,

paths weaving in and out of time and place. And, people

continue to share their photos of the Santa Rosa Labyrinths they have made.

Their beauty and intention ripple outward...

Here are a few to share with you on this birthday that spun from my heart,

            my fingers, and my curiosity

           all these many years ago

           of bending and turning,

            of collaboration and sharing,

           sparking creativity

           in so many forms...

The first four photos are from Peter Clark from the UK. One drawn at the seaside. One painted in a prison.

The second set of four photos are from Ange Virgona, Australia. The first three, set in stone. The last mowed in a lawn.

           And here in my backyard...

            as changes continue to unfold,

as this labyrinth has been witness to all of these years...

Fruit trees now are being added,

            micro-clover soon to be planted,

daffodils bugle the coming of spring on this 15th of March.

Labyrinths provide us with a path to practice change.

Some labyrinths have withstood the passage of time for thousands of years.

Others are here for just an afternoon,

drawn in the sand at the edge of the ocean.

Many modern labyrinths were meant to last for years,

but because of unforeseen circumstances their time is shorter than intended.

And they once again help us to practice letting go and giving thanks for the time they are with us.

The Labyrinth of Life at the Sebastopol, California Teen Center reached such place of letting go

and is at the end of one chapter and the beginning of another chapter that is yet unknown.

Beloved by many, this labyrinth was installed as a statement of life

in the face of many local teen deaths in the late 1990s.

Community of all ages and many local businesses contributed to its making.

Time revealed that this labyrinth was difficult to maintain

with the ever-shifting ground, drought, and flooding.

Four memorial benches still hold the space where the labyrinth was.

            We can easily forget,

as it is something we cannot see…

that once a labyrinth is placed on the ground with intent and walked by many…

the energetic imprint remains even though the physical features may not.

            And the love remains.

Change, loss, and letting go opens the space for something new

and an opportunity to be curious.

If you find yourself at the center of the empty space

of the Sebastopol Teen Center Memorial Garden…

open to that space, the ground below, the sky above,

to the energetic imprint of the labyrinth,

and to all the love that continues to ripple out into our community

as we each follow our path into life.

Making A Three Circuit Labyrinth

           Sometimes...

a labyrinth can take years to become a physical reality.

In 2018 I met with my friend Deb,

to discuss her desire to have a labyrinth on the beautiful land she lives on.

Despite our plans and several meetings,

listening to the land and finding the right spot,

the labyrinth did not come to fruition.

Fast-forward five years and in the blink of an eye... it happened!

This sweet three-circuit Classical Labyrinth was created in less than two hours.

           Deborah says...

This labyrinth is created in perfect timing!! Life and energy is all about change. We have expectations and desires and try as we might— the universe brings in what is perfect in the moment. Thank goodness for Lea and her suggestion, “let’s just do it! And make it simple and small”. Changes are happening!!

Mulch from beneath the surrounding trees was used to fill the paths.

Rocks were placed at the entrance and a single rock was placed at the heart-space

            On Sunday, November 20, 2022,
my friend Isa invited me to join her and friends and community

to gather beneath the crisp, blue November sky in the Sebastopol, CA Square and create

a three-circuit Classical Labyrinth around a tree with its fallen leaves.

As we came together, one of the labyrinth creators, Ariana, came up with the name "ColLabyrinth."
This delighted us all and captured the spirit of our collaborations in making a community labyrinth together.

This simple nine-circuit labyrinth, based on a labyrinth design from Bayeaux, France,

One of my favorite labyrinths is still walk-able after twenty-five years.

This simple nine-circuit labyrinth, based on a labyrinth design from Bayeaux, France,
was installed in 1997 within a circle of redwoods, just to the West of the Episcopal Church and Grounds in Sonoma, CA.

I have found that labyrinths beneath redwoods require little upkeep. The fallen needles are a natural deterrent of additional plant material emerging in the soil. The simple rocks lining the paths do need to be shifted back into place over time as they have a tendency to move over time because of foot traffic and critters scampering over the labyrinth. And fallen branches and needles need to be removed periodically from the tops of rocks.

            This place... is peaceful.

            Quiet.

I recently read an article by NY Times journalist Melissa Kirsch entitled: “Time Warp.” She quotes a few readers who sent in what they do to cope with the time changes. This was my favorite, as well as hers...

"My favorite coping mechanism came from K. E. (my edit) in Bellevue, Wash., who doesn’t change her clocks on Sunday until she happens upon an hour she’d like back, “most of the time waiting until 11 a.m. then deciding that an hour of coffee, muffins and the paper would be great to repeat.” If you have that kind of flexibility in your Sunday schedule, this seems like a sound plan.”

Besides sleeping in and still getting up early…
I'm going to change my clocks sometime in the day
when I want a little more time to do something I enjoy...

What will you do with this extra hour?

On September 6th my group (with Atlas Obscura) visited Castle Foulis, Seat of the Clan Munro and home to the Munro family. It was an amazing day of history and legends with a gentleman who is truly a Scottish National Treasure.New Paragraph

One of the things that The Chief of Clan Munro shared with us, was this ancient sundial. He said that it also tracked the cycles of the moon. How all the nooks and crannies and projections all worked together… has long been lost and forgotten. But it was still an object of beauty and workmanship to be admired. You could plainly see the Munro crest carved on the pedestal, along with the initials of “J & M” which possibly signified that this was a “marriage stone.” However, the stone-sundial atop the pedestal, there is no telling how old it is.

August 2022. This is the second installation of a seven-circuit, Classical Labyrinth at the TLC Child & Family Center in Sebastopol, CA. I had the opportunity to assist the students and staff in March of 2010 in laying out their original labyrinth to honor and remember one of their former Journey Academy students who was enlisted in the Army and killed in action in Afghanistan. TLC wanted this space to also honor all of the students, family and staff that use this labyrinth for so many things. To remember. To soothe anxiety. To learn about navigating life-changes. To mark special occasions. To connect with themselves and the land around them. And most of all, to be a part of a community that cares. Because of some land maintenance, the original labyrinth had to be removed. The teens did this dismantling with honor, intention, and ceremony, placing the stones to the side. Once the ground was prepared at the original site, about forty volunteers of adults and teens rebuilt this labyrinth in thirty-five minutes!

Today, March 15, 2022, the Santa Rosa Labyrinth with its signature heart-space is twenty-five years old. Never could I have imagined where this seven-circuit path would take me… the people I would meet… the places I would visit in search of all things labyrinth…

After thirty-plus years of labyrinth explorations, those initial three questions that came to me after my first labyrinth walk, four years before the Santa Rosa design spun out my compass and fingertips, are still unanswered.

Where do labyrinths come from?
Who first made labyrinths?
How were they used?

The curiosity and wonder are as fresh today as they were with my first step into the labyrinth.

And I think that is one of the greatest gifts possible from the many and diverse labyrinths

that we encounter at this point in history.

           There have been challenges.

Oh have there been challenges and opportunities to explore

the unconscious hidden patterns and obstacles that were once maybe a protection…

that became a detour from living life to the fullest.

I am especially appreciative of the friendship and explorations with Marilyn Larson, who helped me bring the design from paper to the ground for the first time on Memorial Weekend, 1997, and the three other women who came together a year later, on Mother’s day weekend, 1998 to draw the first Santa Rosa Labyrinth on canvas. Kimberly Saward, Alyssa Hall, and Sue Anne Foster. That canvas labyrinth, painted by Sue Anne with ivy for the lines, went out into the world and spread its beauty far and wide.

When I was seventeen, this St. Jude medallion was given to me by a dear high school friend soon after my father’s firefighting accident that left him a paraplegic. That November tragedy disintegrated my family unit with a single blow. Somehow… St. Jude has managed to stick by me all these years and this past summer I created this chaplet for him with nine-million-year-old Connemara beads and a jade Tibetan knot at the other end.
St. Jude is who you petition when you are faced with impossible circumstances. This beloved kin of Christ and Mary, who is also known as the Green Man, holds great mystery and assistance in making the impossible, possible. My recent Novena to him was in asking for help in holding the internal tension of opposites that I’ve been grappling with. And to help us all navigate the opposites in the world that we face. My list is long, as is probably yours…

On day five of the Novena, the middle day, I received some news that greatly diminished my internal tensions. I was also reminded… that twenty-years ago when completing my dissertation that I was also given a means of navigating opposites and finding the way through them to discover what really matters to my heart. I went back to what I had written then and share it with you here now.

I hope it is of help to you today and in the days to come.

The Labyrinth Process: What Matters To Your Heart

When you have only a small amount of time…

Place your hands over your heart. Breathe into this space.

Ask: What really matters to my heart? If I could have anything, no matter how small or big, what would that be? Just a one-word answer will work.

Next, ask to know what is the opposite of my heart’s desire? What is keeping me from what I truly desire? Again, a one-word answer will work.

Hold both of these opposite images in your mind’s eye, equally. Then, take at least three, or more, deep breaths into your heart and hands while thinking of these two images/concepts.

             Then let them go.

Take another breath and ask to know a third new thing. Be curious as to what will come. A single word or image will work

Take a few more breaths and be with this new awareness

           -Long Version-

The Seven-Steps: What do you want to explore? Or, what problem are you dealing with? Almost anything that comes to mind has an opposite. Take one side and begin.

What really matters to my heart? If I could have anything, no matter how small or big, what would that be? Use your journal or art materials to write about this or draw your image, or the colors that represent what matters to your heart. What shape, form, color, or image would best describe this first exploration of opposites?

What gets in the way of what matters to my heart? Using a different page of your journal or a second piece of art material, ask to know what is the conflicting polar opposite of my first image? What is keeping me from my heart’s desire? What shape, form, color, or image would this opposite look like?

Reflect on the conflict or struggle between these two images, or concepts while walking, or finger-walking the labyrinth. Keep your mind focused on both of them and don’t linger more on one or the other.

When you reach the center of the labyrinth, release these first two images, let them go. Then, ask to know a third new image or concept.

Walk, or finger-walk, your way back out of the labyrinth with this new image and/or concept.

Use your journal or art materials to create this third newly discovered image or concept in response to the experience of having walked, or finger walked the labyrinth. What shape, form, color, or image emerged for you in the labyrinth?

Identify and discuss (if by yourself, journal) any new self-awareness resulting from considering your original focus or exploration of opposites within the whole experience.
This garden and labyrinth is being dedicated to all those affected by the fires. This new space will be used for weddings, events, concerts, the church pre-school and picnic and as a place for children walking home from school and the neighbors to take some time out of time and connect with themselves, each other and the world around them.

           bright force of nature
weaving through my dreams and childhood,
waiting for me in fallen abbeys,
in stitches of silver,

           waiting to be freed…
In open meadows painted with wildflowers

the memory of you nuzzles my outstretched palm,

           Somewhere… you roam free
and gallop through blue-green hills
to the sound of music that few can hear.

Looking Through The Maze

           Finding the path...

Most people don't realize that the path through a labyrinth is actually the way found
through a maze...

The false starts and dead ends of a maze confuse your thinking mind and you have to work hard to find the way to the center... on the other side of the coin... a labyrinth has usually, but not always, a single path that takes you to a center place, both literally and metaphorically. All you have to do... is follow the path and notice your experience.

The next time you are in a labyrinth... try walking on the lines. You will find that you are caught in a maze...

And you never know what you will find in a maze...

           a Minotaur...

This completed project was the fifth of eight proposed green rooftops for the Washington DC area by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and is open to the public during business hours. Rooftop design and construction was done by Farrand & English and DC Greenworks.
